How does Zinc check ID's for the DBS?

Zinc's automated ID checking process saves you time whilst ensuring compliance

On the 6th of April 2022 the DBS released new guidance for organisations that want to digitise their DBS checking process. This guidance is the equivalent to the longer standing guidance for checking documents physically for the DBS - section 1.2. Hence this new guidance does not supersede the existing July 2021 guidelines, you can choose to follow either set of guidelines for Identity checking. Zinc is a technology first business and support the digital identity checking route first, with an option for you to conduct manual checks where this isn't possible.

Programmed compliance

If you are conducting a criminal check on Zinc and the applicant selects England & Wales residency and a DBS check is conducted. In this case an ID check and Address check will be added to your request if they're not present, ensuring compliance.

A right to work check can be used in place of an ID. Zinc will collect extra documents if the Identity checking threshold isn't met with the documents provided for right to work. Zinc scores the document type provided and requests additional documents where required in accordance with GPG45. Alongside ID and Address checks, an Identity fraud check is conducted on all candidates.

Zinc's system will not allow you to conduct a DBS check without the necessary checks being passed with a high enough threshold. Zinc's system was built following the GPG45 scoring process, our system will apply the relevant score to each of the 5 Identity checking steps:

Document routes

Zinc cares deeply about candidate & recruiter experience and our tech team works hard to remove as many steps as possible in the checking process. We show the route with the fewest documents required first, then the next best option. We support a wide range of routes to achieving sufficient confidence so that a high percentage of people, from diverse backgrounds can benefit from a digital DBS experience.

Zinc is partnered with Onfido as its Identity verification partner (IDV). Onfido are registered on the trust framework as an approved IDV partner who can deliver high confidence against Right to work and DBS checks. Find Onfido's certificate here.
